There were enough really cool things about the movie that I am really upset that Baz Luhrman had to do his Baz thing.

Basically: Loved the music, loved the visuals (omg so much), liked the actors, liked how close they tried to stay to the book. Disliked their choices to change the things they changed. GOT A FUCKING HEADACHE from the spastic editing and mind-bendingly weird pacing.

I really … really did not like the added Sanitorium bookends. It kept shoving its way into every scene (you do not need to keep cutting back to that shit dammit it doesn’t add anything to the damn story), ate up screentime, and kind of killed Nick’s character for me?? The movie takes his character SO DAMN SERIOUSLY, and Nick … can’t really handle that. He has a subtle little arc and that’s really it. Anything more makes him seem just unrealistic.

Oh and it’s exactly the same bullshit they had in Moulin Rouge. :| It is like the EXACT SAME TROPE. The main difference is that Ewan Mcgregor’s face can handle constant extreme close-ups better than Toby McGuire can. And I actually rather liked Toby?? I feel like people are going to hate him, but I don’t think anything wrong with Nick is his fault. It’s the writing and the obnoxious editing choices.

I also feel like we really lose Gatsby’s arc a lot?? Like the first party scene is SO spastic that we barely see him at all, and that’s his fucking introduction scene dammit. The only reason we get a sense of his character is because they shove Nick’s narration on top of everything to let us know what we SHOULD be seeing onscreen.

And the fucking car scene where Nick and Gatsby go into town together FUCK ARGH FUCK. It’s not even the most vital scene in the story, but it is necessary for the arc of Nick and Gatsby’s relationship. It establishes how Gatsby presents himself to Nick and the specific facts he uses (going to Oxford, being a war hero) are important for later in the story. But we can barely hear what he’s saying because Baz inserted this insane CGI car sequence on top of it. And again, we only know what Gatsby is saying because Nick narrates on top of him WHILE HE IS STILL TALKING.

Overall the narration annoyed the crap outta me. XD I don’t think it was 100% out of place? I liked it in the opening scene! And I really like Fitzgerald’s prose so I didn’t mind having it there in theory, but Baz kept shoving one line or two in at random at the moment when it was MOST IMPORTANT that we FEEL a moment. URGH.

I think Baz is, like, allergic to dialogue scenes, which is a problem because the Great Gatsby is MOSTLY character-based dialogue scenes. He has to be constantly cutting to crazy shots or going to extreme close-up or forcing weird action car sequences into things, and it’s annoying as heck. D:

He seems to have this rule of “why do a scene in two shots when you can do it in FIFTY?” which drives me absolutely nuts ARGH. How can he expect any actor to act when they’re only given one-second-long shots to act in?? This especially peeves me because I feel like DiCaprio was a PERFECT choice for Gatsby but I feel like I BARELY got a sense of his character because they were too busy cutting to other shit. ><

“Uh oh, we haven’t checked in to see Nick’s reaction in the last two seconds! What could he possibly be feeling about Gatsby when the camera is SLIGHTLY CLOSER than it was three seconds ago?? Surely we MUST CUT HERE to convey the IMMENSELY IMPORTANT information.”

They even managed to kill the “green light” scene. HOW DO YOU DO THAT. You can sell that entire scene in like two fucking cuts. But I swear they worked in at least five reaction shots (of the same character) AND OF COURSE, NICK NARRATED OVER THE WHOLE THING, even though he was basically saying “I don’t know what’s going on when Gatsby reaches out to the green light that you can clearly see on screen.”

FEELS. I HAVE THEM.

Common Myths About Bisexuality from the lovely Webcomic “Jesus Loves Lesbians, Too” by bi blogger & author Maria Burnham (writer/memoirist) and Maggie Siegel-Berele (comic artist).

I usually don’t reblog stuff like this because this is my art blog but this hit close to home and reminded me of so many conversations that made me feel like garbage.

It always makes me see red when I see lesbians (and gay men) treating bisexuals this way. I don’t think I can even type too much more without quickly reaching a point where I just smash my head into the keyboard.

I just want to add that there is nothing wrong with wanting sex and not love, either

That, of course, is entirely true.

Everyone has the potential to be prejudiced. It’s just really, really disheartening when people who you turn to for comfort and support are the most prejudiced against you (aka homosexual people thinking these things about bisexuals. Not that straight people don’t, but…you’d just think that people who have experienced similar prejudice themselves can DAMN WELL THINK.)

One of the highlights of exhibiting at the Emerald City Comic-Con for me was getting to be a speaker on the Beyond Categories: Non-Binary Sexuality panel!

Randall Kirby, Leia Weathington, Charles “Zan” Christensen, Ellen Forney, Jason Thompson and myself gathered together to discuss having bi/pan/queer sexualities in a monosexual world where both the straights and the gays don’t accept you (or straight up view you as The Enemy) and our experiences with biphobia– all with a healthy dose of dick jokes and wise-crackin’.

The anthology on non-binary sexuality that Zan is putting together through his publishing house, Northwest Press, is titled “Anything That Loves”, look for it in July.

So a bit of backstory: Yesterday I decided to ~~torture myself~~ listen to an episode of the Savage Love podcast dedicated to bisexuality (they had a “guest expert”! I had high hopes!), and you may or may not have witnessed my increasingly bewildered (see: enraged) live-tweeting of the whole thing. I was really riled up about some of the (imo) ignorant, misleading, and genuinely hurtful things said in the episode.

GOOD NEWS THOUGH, swooping in to save my day was this wonderful panel from Emerald City Comic Con discussing non-binary sexuality as it relates to comics, media, and life in general. The panelists, moderator, and audience questions were all SO thoughtful and intelligent and EXACTLY what I feel people need to hear about this topic. So do please give it a listen if you’re able!

I don’t really get on my soapbox often, but here I go(!!) in order to applaud everyone involved in this amazing panel. Thank you for putting it together and thank you for sharing your stories and insight to the rest of us!

Really? Calling us dumbasses, Brandy? No they do not look the fucking same. Those car eyes? The fucking proportions of body to head that make her skinnier? Are you fucking serious? Disney you are pissing me the fuck off.

…. Are you serious? The only difference are the eyes and that’s about it.

Seriously? Her legs are longer by making her waist higher. Her waist is also skinner, making her hips just out more in an hourglass shape. Merida had a realistic body shape for a teen. Plus the glitz on a dress she obviously hated. Disney is saying she wasn’t “pretty” enough. Whoever has been on the artistic team of late needs to be fired. Rapunzel looks weird and Belle doesn’t even look like herself anymore, and the classic princess all look Barbie-fied. Being pretty is not a bad thing at all, but they are making it a priority in marketing, giving girls yet again more unrealistic role models.

When I was a kid, the only ‘princess’ I liked was Belle because she liked reading and was brave, but I never wanted her merch because she didn’t look the same as the movie. She was always in that godawful yellow dress that she wore ONCE. When Mulan came out, I was ecstatic, because I really connected with her. She was tough and out spoken and brave and resourceful. But all the merch shows of her is in the dress in the beginning, which she wore ONCE.

Disney told me that being “princess-like” was most important, and being a boy for much of my childhood, I thought that was bullshit. That was only one cool aspect of the girls. Not the most important. It can’t be what we teach our girls to focus on—the glitz and glamour over bravery and selflessness and and shit. Not every girl fits that princess type. So they are left feeling inadequate. Believe me, that psychological shit is real, because it messed me the fuck up. It took me a long time to learn how to look girly, because I associated it with an ideal I could never have or achieve and failing to achieve that ideal brought a lot of grief to my life.

tl;dr: There definitely are differences and I am surprised that as an artist, you don’t see them. But the point is the others do—a LOT of them CHILDREN and girls, who we need to protect from this kind of bullshit.

I agree with everything except blaming/firing the art team! I severely doubt any of these changes were their decision at all. :\ They were probably doing the best they could in … incredibly restrictive circumstances.

But considering that we can’t blame the artists, I am wondering who (or what) exactly we could reasonably pin the blame on, or how an unpleasant and widespread trend like this could be addressed. The only Disney merchandise I ever bought was plushes of the animal sidekicks (+every lion character). I could never really relate to the female characters save for Mulan, and even at a young age I noticed how jenky the merchandise looked compared to the films. XD

Historically, you can probably blame Eisner, as he is popularly credited for the creation of the “Princess Franchise,” as well as the Disney Store. However, there is probably a mid-level marketing guy who probably said “shit, merida doesn’t match the others, gussy her up, and make her proportions more normal” and we got this.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

It’s good to know this happens at other target locations. Mine was never this fantastic.
